What is a French butter dish you say? You stuff butter inside the crock's lid. Place a small amount of water into the bottom of the crock. Then put the lid back inside the crock. The water creates an airtight seal that keeps oxygen away from the butter (oxygen is what turns butter rancid). Tom Bottman, Hood River, Oregon.
