Cathy McGrath - Full Circle Pottery
Creating with clay is something that I genuinely love to do. From my first pottery class in college to my return to the craft over 40 years later, it has always been something I have felt drawn to. The feeling of holding a lump of clay in my hands and making something tangible, useful, and beautiful fills me with contentment. I created “Full Circle Pottery” as I realized how I have come full circle, back to the love of clay I developed all those years ago as a young student.
There are many circular symbols involved in working with clay. Balls of clay, the pottery wheel, centering, buckets of water and glaze. All forms on the wheel begin as round shapes. It is fitting for me to use the Celtic symbol, the Triquetra to "sign" my pots. The symbol is made of interlaced circular shapes. It can represent earth, water, and fire, or mind, body, and soul, to name a few. For me, all those elements are essential to creating forms from clay, either on the wheel or by hand, and hold special meaning to me as a potter.
I am fortunate to be able to create with clay every day, and love to share my creations with others.
